Yes, every visitor arriving in the Cayman Islands must show a passport or other valid travel document to a Customs and Border Control officer. In this article, we explain the 2026 entry requirements for tourists visiting Grand Cayman.
Do you need a passport to visit Grand Cayman?
Yes. Every person arriving in the Cayman Islands must produce a passport or another valid document that proves their identity and nationality. According to Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control, this document should be valid beyond the date of your return ticket (Customs & Border Control).
The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory, not part of the United States, so you cannot visit with just a driver’s license like you might on some domestic trips.
Does your passport need 6 months validity?
No. Cayman Customs and Border Control says your passport must be valid beyond the date of your return ticket, but it does not necessarily need to be valid for more than six months if your stay is shorter than that (Customs & Border Control). Your airline may have its own rules, so check with them before you fly.
Do US citizens need a visa for the Cayman Islands?
No. US citizens do not need a tourist visa to visit the Cayman Islands (US Department of State). Visitors from certain other countries do need a visa, so if you are not a US, UK or Canadian citizen, check the official list of countries that require a visa before you book.
What else do you need at the border?
Besides your passport, Customs and Border Control may ask for the following (Customs & Border Control):
A paid return ticket, or a ticket to your next destination outside the Cayman Islands.
Proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay.
A completed customs declaration (one per family travelling together).
If you are carrying CI$10,000 or more in cash (or the foreign equivalent), you must declare it. You can read more about this in our article about the best currency to use in the Cayman Islands.
How long can you stay as a tourist?
Visitors can be granted permission to stay for up to six months. This can be extended on application to the Director of Customs and Border Control (Customs & Border Control).
What should you NOT bring to the Cayman Islands?
The Cayman Islands has a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs. Marijuana in all forms is illegal, including THC and CBD products such as gummies, vapes and edibles, even if they are legal where you live. Bringing them can result in arrest, fines or imprisonment (Customs & Border Control).
Fruits, vegetables, plants, meats and animal products must also be declared on your customs form.
Do cruise ship passengers need a passport?
Cruise passengers should follow the documentation rules of their cruise line, and the Cayman Islands Government publishes a separate page on passport exemptions. We recommend travelling with a valid passport in all cases, as it is the simplest way to get back home if you miss the ship or need to fly.
If you only have one day in port, then we recommend a Stingray City tour, which is the most popular activity in Grand Cayman.
Final thoughts
You need a valid passport to visit the Cayman Islands, and US citizens do not need a visa. Bring your return ticket, fill in your customs form honestly, and leave any CBD or marijuana products at home.
